MGAC-history

Originally known as Woomera Aboriginal Corporation, Mirndiyan Gunana Aboriginal Corporation is based at Gununa, Mornington Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Mornington Island is the largest of the Wellesley Islands – a group of 23 islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The main township of Gununa, with a population of approximately 1200, is located in the South West corner of Mornington Island. Woomera was founded in 1973 and incorporated in 1983.

The name ‘woomera’ referred to the ‘spear-thrower’ but it is not a word in either the Lardil or Kayadilt languages.

As a result of the vigorous new planning of the entire organisation and reflections on the contemporary associations with name ‘woomera’, it was decided in 2009 to change the corporation’s name to the lyrical Mirndiyan Gununa Aboriginal Corporation, a name which is not only in Lardil language but has a symbolic meaning : it means many people (gununa) dreaming (mirndiyan).
